My apologies, but no promises. I'd just like to reflect VERY briefly on this past semester (& what an appropriate day to be thankful). I just finished my first semester as a college junior and it has been TOUGH, for real, for real. Sometimes, I honestly felt like a slave to my academics, but once again, it all paid off! I'd like to thank God for his grace even when I'm less than graceful =). And I also thank all family and friends who have supported me through it, I couldn't have done it without them. Sooooo, what are you grateful for (this sounds like a Thanksgiving thing, doesn't it?)? What good has come to your life in the 2009? Just some food for though on this Christmas Day, as we approach a new decade. Give Me a Break.

Our First Lady, Michelle Obama, recently visited the Grand Canyon in a casual outfit, which included a pair of shorts. Personally, I don't believe the hype about the alleged "outrage" over Mrs. Obama's clothing. Who exactly, in this day and age, actually has the mindset or time to be "outraged" about other people's clothes anyway?

But just to put some things in perspective here, let's briefly review what's currently acceptable to the American public. I mean, maybe I'm crazy here.
So, let me get this straight. We accept and/ or like....

People Willing to Do Anything for Money and/or 15 Minutes of Fame (aka, "Reality Stars")

Home Wreckers & Unfaithful Husbands

Video *ahem* "Vixens"

People Who Are Famous for Sex Tapes

But some people are upset about Michelle Obama wearing shorts in the summer desert?
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 147px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_YUKNhY4Exk0/SozG05AdXLI/AAAAAAAAAIM/Q62cLEHooIs/s200/capt.af7b29fa383c4e86aed0de9de715044a.obama_azdf104.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371887067504401586" />

I just don't get it.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://shanaspeaks.blogspot.com/2009/08/michelle-obamas-shorts.html' title='Americans Can't Bear to Look at Michelle Obama's Legs? Of course, I listen to much more than 5 songs, but these are at the top right now. Below is my Imeem playlist.

1. "Get Fresh" Another single from Chicago MC, Kid Sister (still patiently awaiting her official album; i don't do mixtapes). It's mean base line and electro sounds are--simply put--FRESH, hence the title. If I could, I'd totally break dance to this.

2. "Liberian Girl" Don't know about you, but I grew up on Michael Jackson. One of MJ's lesser-known singles off of 88's Bad album, "Liberian Girl" is authentically romantic, and not even the funniest Michael joke can take away from that.

3. "Ready for the Floor" I picked this one up from my sister, therefore, it's different. Between that contagious 80's dance sound and random cell phone/pager noises, I can't help put tap into my inner dork dance moves. And of course, the band's name is Hot Chip.

4. "So Beautiful" Musiq Soulchild has made yet another R&B song that is capable of converting even this hip hop head. Take note, young men. I promise you; when it comes to us ladies, Musiq is your friend, not Lil' Wayne.

5. "Butterfly" So the band name Crazy Town, may be leaning towards the lame side, but this old throwback is not. Nearly 10 years later, "Butterfly" is still that cool/chill/swagged-out song. Well, to me, at least.
<img style="display:block; It only took one preview of the first season for me to determine that a) I wasn’t interested and b) that I disliked the show. So, therefore, I kept my mouth shut about it. But the buzz about the second season made watching it irresistible, even to me.

So today at work, I was minding my own business when I got the news that Lisa Hartwell and her husband have "downsized" to a more affordable home, after their attempt to restructure their loan on their $2.9 million mansion “didn’t work out.” Ok, so this is the THIRD [not first or second] time a cast member has had difficulty [to say the least] with her home ownership due to threats of foreclosure or just plain old falling behind on the rent. All this has left me wondering, “Why are the Real Housewives of Atlanta so dag on phony???” I don’t care to bad mouth other women, especially the sistas, but the RHOA have left me no choice. If these women were humble and allowed their wealth and success to speak for themselves, maybe I wouldn’t be posting this. But, when you say things like, “In Atlanta, image is everything,” I’m going to expect you to put your money where your mouth is! Apparently, that’s all these women are—all mouth and no money [or not nearly as much as they pretend]. They’re so busy fighting with each other in order to be famous, that they [and their husbands] aren’t even paying attention to their finances. Get it together, ladies!

Jennifer Hudson Gives Birth to Baby Boy! They are referring to numbers and their textbook logic, not necessarily real people with real problems that have lasting effects [No disrespect to economists, but I have point here]. So while the unemployment rates are slowing, be aware that it is still expected to peak (at 10%) in the first half of 2010 and that these rates are higher for 1/3 of the population, better known as "minorities" (I don't care for the term). Not to mention the thousands of newly unemployed Americans--regardless of color--who lack the standard degrees and computer skills (Baby Boomer generation), who still have to actually seek jobs in a totally different work force than back in the 70's and 80's.

This is not a pity party, but just a reminder that mediocrity just won't cut it, especially for us.

Embedded video from CNN Video

Yours Truly (ME!) Paula Abdul getting booted from-- excuse me; I mean, 'quitting'-- the show. You mean to tell me that the ONLY person that Americans have ever actually idolized on that show is getting the boot??

And, dear old American Idol[atry], I’ll have you to know that Paula Abdul looks damn good for her age! Simon and Randy are old too! Why don’t they get the boot? Oh, I forgot-- they’re men.

My Very Brief List of Grievances:

1. Ryan Seacrest

2. Simon is not American; why is judging American Idol?

3. Randy says “dog” and “dude” waaayy too much

4. The winners are arguably the losers (except for Carrie Underwood & Kelly Clarkson AFTER she cut all ties with American Idol[atry])

5. The theme song is loud, annoying & old

6. Ryan Seacrest

7. If Randy brags about working with Mariah Carey "one mo’ ‘gen…"

8. Simon just happens to find only young, attractive people to be talented

9. Simon’s Baby Gap tees

10. Simon’s haircut

11. Ryan Seacrest

12. Runner-up Adam Lambert’s sexuality was conveniently exposed via personal photos a week before the final vote

13. I still haven’t forgotten about the big fuss over Fantasia’s baby on the show (not that it was the judges faults or anything…I’m just sayin)

14. Can’t even count the number of times the REAL talent gets overlooked

15. Simon is not American; why is judging American Idol?

16. Ryan Seacrest

17. Paula Abdul, the only star on the show is 'quitting,' aka getting fired because she's not a spring chicken

18. Ryan Seacrest's salary. Are his spectacularly mediocre hosting abilities worth $5 million more than Paula’s bizarre judgements of people who have more singing abilities than she ever did?

19. Did I mention that no one really cares about the winners?

20. Ryan Seacrest

On behalf of all Americans who are sick of this never-ending nightmare of a show, American Idol, we hate you.

--Shana

Unemployed Woman Sues College for Tuition

A 27-year-old New York woman (represent! lol) is suing her Alma mater, Monroe College in the Bronx Supreme Court for $70,000 in tuition money! She claims that the Office of Career Advancement did not follow through on the promises that it makes. Monroe College's spokeswoman declares that this lawsuit is "without merit."

Look, I don't know what exactly happened in this specific situation, but I can't help it-- I was GLAD to hear this in the news. It's about time someone started holding schools accountable for the debt that many schools practically require and the unmatched employment thereafter.

The fact of the matter is, employment standards continue to rise while employment continues to decline. I understand that colleges can't control the job market or the economy. And I also understand that in a competitive job market, individuals should distinguish themselves in various ways, namely through higher-level education. But, where does that leave the real, hard-working people who are trying to keep up, but the economy and job market won't let up? Is it honestly the faults of every single individual out there who took out loans to distinguish themselves in a competitive market? Is it a coincidence that there are thousands of Americans struggling with finding employment after spending ginormous amounts of money for higher education? And/ or could it be that colleges (and employers as well) need to be held more accountable? What should you do if you did your part (that includes using career services, networking, internships, fellowships, etc.), but the college didn't really do its part? Or maybe, this could be another example of an emerging era in which individuals claim less and less responsibility for their own actions (or lack thereof) and ultimately, their own lives.

Maybe this woman is just trying to get paid, but if her claims are true, I hope she gets every last penny of that tuition money and sparks something among the several Americans who are in this same situation.

...I'm just saying

Mr. Prez, VP, Dr. Gates, and Officer Crowley Enjoy Beer Together

I genuinely appreicate the effort and statement that Pres. But there is a such thing as dating people on your level. Being on your level has several dimensions: education, morals, religion/faith, future goals/plans, politics, etc.

But have you ever felt like being totally open to the idea of dating a person regardless of the differences between you two backfired? When a person dates a someone who is not on their level and that person acts up-- I call it an unfortunate case of charity dating. You're interested in an average-looking person who does not and doesn't plan to pursue any kind of higher education. You two met by chance; let's say at a library. You two start seeing each other consistently, but instead of appreciating that he is fortunate to go out with a beautiful, intelligent, goal-oriented woman, he acts like "he got it like that." Starts treating you like some average "chick" once he's figured out that you like him.

Solution: Like Nancy Reagan said, "Just say no." Just say NO to charity dating! People rarely appreciate you and it doesn't matter how lucky they are to have met or dated you. I think it's just easier and more realistic to look for some basic similarities in a potential partner. That way, if you're going to get played, at least you won't feel like, "Damn, I lowered my standards for your no-goal-having, opportunistic [expletive]!"Please date people on your level.

AND THIS JUST IN! Reggie Bush just came to his senses; he's figured out that charity dating is a no-no [usually, at least].

Rep: Kim Kardashian, Reggie Bush Split

Posted using ShareThis

'Assertive, Non-traditional, Independent' and other Gimmicks that Define the 21st Century Woman Ideal

No, this not a male-bashing rant. In fact, this is a self-assessment ("self," as in women).

Ever since the 1960's, Americans have taken a special interest in questioning and often changing traditions. And of course, change can be good. Change has brought about civil rights for most Americans (except certain rights for gays, but that's another topic). Change has given me the opportunity to pursue higher education; heck, for me to even sit at the front of the bus is the result of change. So clearly, I'm a proponent of positive change. But what about questioning "change" itself? Are all traditions evil?

21st Century Women, I hate to burst our little bubbles, but it's time to question the things and habits that we so proudly label "liberating," "free," "easier," "non-traditional," "assertive," "casual," etc.

"Casual Sex" Oh really? Look, do what you gotta do. But I'm gonna say what I gotta say. As a woman myself and a student who has attended an all-girls' school and currently attends a women's college, I unofficially consider myself an expert on women (emotionally & socially speaking, at least). Here's my problem with supposed casual sex; the FACT that most young women are doing it to please a guy who isn't interested in committing to them in the first place. In a perfect world, all women who claim to have "casual" sex are just like Samantha Jones on Sex & the City (not necessarily in terms of the quantity of lovers, just her convenient lack of human emotions). Samantha has sex with the Mr. Right Now and usually walks away with no feelings for him. Now if this is HONESTLY you, then never mind. But to you women who know deep down inside that you're hoping for something more, try something called standards (I got that from Steve Harvey lol. http://browseinside.harpercollins.com/index.aspx?isbn13=9780061728976 ). You don't have to do away with monogamous, committed relationships just because it's "old school." But, hey! If you find giving yourself to someone who hasn't earned such a privilege as "liberating," then fine =).

"Cohabitation" For the life of me, I just can't figure out how it's "21st Century" to give yourself a head start on taking care of a man. Maybe I'm weird, but I thought that was what marriage is for. I don't know about you, but I'm not about to rush to live with some dude who has no legal or financial obligations to me (unless we have kids), but can expect a fairly neat home, food, clean clothes, and sex whenever from me. And let's be honest, most men (and probably yours too) are not going to keep their "fair share" of cooking, housekeeping, and other roles that have been traditionally assigned to women...(That's usually because we let them get away with it, but that's just my view on it).

"I HAVE to Work! I Just Couldn't BEAR to be a Housewife!" Throughout almost my entire life, I have felt as if it is wrong to be OK with the idea of being a stay-at-home mom, or whatever you call it. Why do people turn up their noses when you admit that you wouldn't mind taking care of your family full-time? I don't know if that's just city thing or what, but I feel like there's a code of uniformity about a girl's aspirations-- it's soooo terribly 1950's to be a stay-at-home mom in the 21st century. Don't get me wrong, I plan on taking care of myself with an interesting career, hopefully to make a positive difference in people's lives. I think it's great when a girl can aspire to and actually attain the life that she envisions. But what many fail to acknowledge is the fossilized expectation placed upon wives and mothers--regardless of whether she's PTA president or U.S. President (exaggeration, I know)--to still have dinner ready and take care of the house. Now, you can work tirelessly from 9 to 6 (you can forget about 9 to 5 these days) AND have dinner on the table by 7...all with a smile on your face!

My point? Let's stop looking down on the 1950's housewife stereotype and appreciate our freedom-- which includes the choice to be a stay-at-home mom.

"Assertive Women" Firstly, let me just say that I agree with most of the principles of being more assertive. It's important to make sure you're getting the most out of life. Here's where I get a little resistant, however; does assertive mean that I ask men out and never expect my date to pay for me on a date? I respect the idea of stepping outside of your comfort zone and asking a guy out (every now and then). But I can't get down with this "She Got Her Own" gimmick. Just because "I got my own" doesn't mean that I can't expect my man to take care of me. If I ask a guy out, then that's different. But please believe; if a man asks me out on a date, then he should be paying! Ladies, let's not be so quick to jump on this Independent bandwagon and stop holding men responsible! If he likes you so much, he'll gladly pay for your dinner. Don't fall for this "She Got Her Own" gimmick; it's just an excuse to spend your precious time and not have to pay for it. If he likes you so much, then he'll be willing to commit to you, instead of calling it "casual" sex while he gets with you, her, her (maybe "him??"), AND your best friend.

So, beautiful ladies of the 21st century, live your life; but make sure you're being smart about it. If someone else is getting MORE benefits from your "21st Century Woman" lifestyle than you are, then maybe it's time to re-evaluate some of your habits. Yes change is good; but sometimes we have to listen to that old saying, "If it ain't broke, then don't try to fix it!"

Chris Brown Apologizes Like a Grown Man is Supposed To

My dearest readers! I have abandoned the blogosphere for a week, which is a year in blogging time. My apologies! I have several over-due posts underway now.

Down to business-- as everyone knows by now, Chris Breezy has released a public apology regarding the Rihanna assault incident in February. I have to say, it was extremely well done (minus the loud reddish-orange turtle neck). And though we know that Chris Brown didn't write those words himself, his publicist did an excellent job of conveying his real take on the situation. Unfortunately, cycles of abuse are continued from one generation to the next, just like in Brown's life. Considering his own childhood experiences, we need to have some compassion; it's really time that we (the public) begin to at least consider forgiving Chris Brown for his mistake that day.

But to all you women out there who justified his beat-down on Rihanna-- I just gotta say, "In yo face!" Nope, ya'll are not off the hook! Chris himself has accepted full responsibility-- as well as a real man should-- and doesn't create excuses or even condones his violent actions. You can stop making excuses for Chris now and go back to making excuses for your (possibly abusive) partner, like you usually do.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42S_5KZ2xuA

On a side note...That Oops! chain is reeaall suspect...I'm just sayin.

Confessions of a "Stuck-Up Spelmanite" Pt.1: The Female Once-Over

This is the first entry in my new series, "Confessions of a 'Stuck-Up Spelmanite" (A Spelmanite is a woman who attends/ attended Spelman College). This is basically my candid & relatable look into my thoughts about life as a presumed snob. Like many people, I've been labelled throughout most of my life. Sometimes nice, more not so nice, and some that leave me saying, "Uh, Thank You???"

For example, have you ever survived the social rite of passage that I call the "What I Thought When I First Met You" Ceremony? You know what I'm talking about... When someone finally figures out that you're a pretty cool, down-to-earth person instead of the stuck-up chick who "think she cute." You know those people-- they assume that they know everything about your character without ever holding a conversation with you. But once you're deemed "cool," then they spill all the beans about how stuck-up they initially thought you were. RANDOM PERSON: "You know what, Shana? You're really cool. Cuz I thought you were stuck-up at first!" ME: "Uh, Thanks?"

Gee, I'm soooo very happy that you decided to get to know me before you stamped me with "stuck-up" for all eternity!

Today's Strange Social Phenomenon: "The Female Once-Over."

Situational Description: You're walking down a city street to your job/internship. And, for the record, I love my share of this music just like anyone else. (I go to school in Atlanta, ok)

But where does this leave everyone else, specifically New York rappers? No one can deny that NYC pioneered hip hop and even further evolved it into the late 90s (along with other regions, of course). So where's the play? BK rapper Fabolous (who isn't really the best NY has to offer, if I may say so myself) had a few words about it on Hot 97 with DJ Kay Slay. "They trying to force us [NY rappers] out. Let's be 100% real about it-- back in the 90s and early 20oo's, New York rappers were celebrating their fame and fortune and weren't really trying to share with anyone else. They didn't even want to collaborate with each other, let alone someone from New Orleans or Atlanta.

But what about Jay-Z? Jay continues to get play everywhere. Well, Maino (remember "Hi Hater?") thinks it's also a New School v. Well, my take on it is like this-- if you're making ringtone music, then you're signed, sealed, and delivered... enough to make the quick money for the label but not enough to develop a long-term career. Ringtone music = catchy beat + easy dance + shallow lyrics (YUUULE!) The fact is, whether or not you're from NYC, if you're a rapper who takes your craft seriously enough to expect your label to invest real time and money in your development, then you're pretty much left to the streets (or Myspace lol).

ALL IN ALL... Rest in peace to New York hip hop? She beat out EVERYBODY last year with her album, "Fearless." And now she's collaborated with T-Pain on a rap song. Due to her *ahem* hard work and, of course, strategic partnership with Kanye West, Amber has managed to become a celeb in her own right.

On her blog on globalgrind.com, Amber recently announced that she will be moving to NYC, due to her new contract with Ford Models, claiming, "I do not want to 'waste my celebrity..." So, she is pursuing her modeling and acting career. And you know what? Why not?! She's young, beautiful (arguably), and Kanye's girlfriend. The fact of the matter is she is using her assets (no pun intended) to get what she wants in life. Do I agree with it? Not really. But Kanye has decided to practically give this woman fame on a platter. So let's not hate on her..."I ain't sayin she a gold digger..." LMAO

Check Out her Blog (OR just click on the pic above)>> http://globalgrind.com/content/790500/Amber-Blogs-Make-Your-Dreams-Come-True/

But on a side note...
Why couldn't none of his BLACK girlfriends get some fame? (Not to mention, his ex-fiance, who clearly wants some attention, hence, Harlem Heights) I know there's talk about Amber's "mixed" background, but let's keep it 100% real. Ya'll know most people view her as a white woman (no offense to white or bi-racial people of course). I don't mean to be so ignorant, but dang, Kanye!

Ok, ok I'm done now. =)

Bill O'Reilly Reilly Amuses Me (Get it? Reilly=Really.. ha ha)

It was the shot heard round the world, "Enough with the phony platitudes, ok?"

*GASP* Oh, my! Ladies and gentlemen, Bill O'Reilly has once again went out of his way to make an ignorant statement for his spectacle of a show. This time, his target is the late Michael Jackson. (Because you know how dangerous the dead can be, of course.)

Ok, but with my sarcasm aside; there actually was a time when his outlandish, almost God-like judgments placed upon strangers and situations would outrage me! But after several years of hearing such brash and illogical statements, I honestly just became amused by them. My apologies, militant black people, die hard liberals, and avid Michael Jackson-ites-- I just CAN'T get mad at the Bill O'Reilly!

This man continues to get fame and fortune by attempting to destroy the public images of complete strangers through his words. Now, the only thing I feel when I hear about Mr. O'Reilly is CONFUSION. I'm perplexed--WHY DO PEOPLE TAKE HIM SO SERIOUSLY? Bill O'Reilly may or may not even really believe half of the fluff that he says himself. But, regardless of whether or not he genuinely supports his theatrical statements, one thing is for sure-- Bill O'Reilly will constantly play on the raw emotions and ignorance of masses of people in order to get PAID! (Dolla dolla bill ya'll) He's in it for the doe. Whenever a person is willing to ignore ethics or logic, he is not to be trusted or taken seriously! Period. Point blank.

So people can stop trying to argue with Bill O'Reilly (or literally yelling at the TV)-- it's just going to bring him even more paper. Let's honestly just let Michael Jackson rest in peace by doing what we should've been doing all along--ignoring the hell outta Bill O'Reilly (but laughing at his show when no one's around).
Some call it commentary; I call it entertainment.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://shanaspeaks.blogspot.com/2009/07/bill-oreilly-reilly-amuses-me-get-it.html' title='Bill O'Reilly Reilly Amuses Me (Get it? The only reason why I know of this song's existence is because I frequent iTunes store and noticed that it is a top download. I didn't even bother to click on the 30 second preview. Well, today was the first day I actually heard the song. I turned on Vh1's Jump Start this morning, just to have something playing while I do laundry (unnecessary info, I know). So my back was turned to the TV as I was collecting my laundry and I heard a guitar intro to a song. I knew it was Kelly Clarkson, before I even heard her voice or actually saw her face. Why does this song sound EXACTLY like "Since U Been Gone?!??" I felt like it was deja vu or I got caught in a time warp and found myself in 10th grade again when "Since U Been Gone" was blaring out of every radio. Now, I'll admit, I liked the screaming, rock-ish 2004 hit before it started taking over my life. However, this new song not only sounds just like it (which I think is boring in & of itself), but unlike "Since U Been Gone," she's screaming about needing some man in her life. Come on guys, "My life Would SUCK Without You?" If your life My Life would SUCK without somebody, then you're pretty pathetic. Compare for yourself.

Since U Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson

My Life Would Suck Without You - Kelly Clarkson

The moral of this story? This is exactly why I DO NOT listen to the radio. There is very little originality on the airwaves. I don't remember the last time I've been genuinely excited about a hip hop song. I can't recall being thoroughly satisfied with any of my fav artists' albums recently (except for M.I.A. & Santogold... fire). Beyonce's "Single Ladies" was forced on me (I like the song now, but initially I didn't get it). Why is "Live Your Life" still in the top 10 of Billboard? Britney Spears sounds exactly how she did in 1999. And now Kelly Clarkson is screaming again. And the record execs wonder why everyone goes online for their music. We're sick of the same old crap on the radio.

Happy New Year, yadda yadda yadda

Helllllooooo everyone (I love the pretending like people are listening thing)! HAPPY NEW YEAR, HAPPY 2009, HAPPY ANOTHER YEAR OF LIFE! =)

I wish you well on your future endeavors. I am in no real shape to give out serious advice about goals right now; I can use some for myself actually. Good luck & don't give up.

Since I'm feeling talkative, o

pinionated, and energetic, I figured I'd post a new entry. It's mostly about two of MTV's newest "reality" shows: "The City" and "Daddy's Girls."

The City- I'm going to get right into it. I really like Whitney Port from watching The Hills. She seems foc

used, goal-oriented, nice, and balanced (unlike all the other annoying people on that show). And since I'm from NYC I was excited to leave The Hills in the dust to watch The City. BUT *dun dun dun* I am DISAPPOINTED! =( Only 3 episodes have aired and I have some major problems with it already.

1- First of all, the theme song is annoying, no offense to the Pussycat Dolls or anything (I actually like some of their music).

2- I could appreciate a little more about Whitney's actual job. Let's face it, you can't pay rent for apartments on the 30th floor in Manhattan without actually working. A little more reality would be nice in this "reality" show in that respect.

3- But here's my MAJOR MAJOR PROBLEM; WHERE THE BLACK PEOPLE AT?! That was kind of a joke, but seriously, where is the diversity in this show? How can a "reality" show about New York City, which is the most diverse place in the world, NOT have PEOPLE OF COLOR? It's more than just color too. Why is everyone so rich? There is much more to "the city" than "uptown socials" and "downtown hipsters." And the last time I checked, "Uptown" meant Harlem and sometimes Washington Heights. But I forgot, diverse people don't exist in this version of 'The City." It's all so FAKE!

4- With all that aside, did I mention that it's pretty dull so far?

My suggestion: Whitney needs new friends because this cast is lame.

Daddy's Girls- This one kept my attention. I am biased though & there's only been one episode. I appreciated the simple sequence of events. There is just the right amount of people and scenarios to keep me interested, but not confused. I also like how Angela & Vanessa keep it in the family by adding on their cousin to the cast. Their focus on the shoe line is cool too; let's not forget why we're in L.A. in the first place. They also make me want to get off my butt and start walking in the morning (haven't done it yet though). Most of all, I give Angela major props for discussing exactly why her ex-boyfriend dumped her. He left because he couldn't wait for sex. Not because she was "too bossy" or "too fat" or whatever other false reasons women use to blame themselves. Angela (and many more women than you think) plans to wait until marriage. I really appreciate the message. Even though everyone does not wait until marriage, I truly appreciate the display of that option because it is NOT impossible. Believe it or not, some people ACTUALLY WAIT (or at least strive to wait) UNTIL MARRIAGE. Besides waiting until then, generally waiting until you are fully comfortable with having sex is important. A teenage girl can appreciate Angela Simmons talking about a real life situation more than a health teacher saying, "Don't have sex because you will get pregnant & die." And speaking of waiting until you're fully comfortable with having sex, (Back to The City for a sec) do you think that Jay is avoiding "defining" his relationship with Whitney because she's probably not having sex with him as quickly as he'd like her to? Just a thought.

Back to Daddy's Girls>> My only issue? Angela & Vanessa need to stop fronting like they grew up in Saddle Brook, NJ & own up to living in Queens, NY until recently.

That's all for now. Hasta luego homies!

BARACK OBAMA IS OUR NEXT PRESIDENT! Governor Sarah Palin has been the leading act in recent interviews and other media events. She's been highly criticized for her interview with Katie Couric. I can't really blame people, either. When was it ok for the next possible VP to say "I'll get back to ya?!"
But I think that these are testaments to what I initially thought of Senator McCain's VP pick. I feel that Gov. Palin is little more than a figurehead for the McCain campaign. In a desperate and selfish attempt to renew interest in his campaign, McCain has found his secret weapon-- A WOMAN! And not just a stiff, man-ish VP, but a hockey mom of 5, one of which is volunteering in the military & one of which has Down Syndrome. Through marriage, she is of Native Alaskan heritage (DIVERSITY!). She's just a PTA mom who wants to make a difference. There you have it-- "SARAH PALIN: A FRESH PERSPECTIVE"!
All of these qualities are great, but does she have enough experience & knowledge of her running mate/ D.C.? CAN SHE RUN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?
Sarah Palin is being used. And what's worse? It just might work. As a feminine feminist (lol, but seriously), I am a proud supporter of female leaders and professionals. However, the standards of quality should not be lowered just to satisfy an unofficial quota. Appointing an unqualified woman is equivalent to no woman--or man, for that matter--serving in that position in the first place. The VP debate this past Thursday made it clear to me that Palin is not ready to do this. Her rehearsed answers, "John is a maverick," and superb ability to divert the questions proves that a 5 week crash course cannot prepare her for a debate or interview or (drum roll please)........ the vice presidency.
And a note on that Catie Couric interview. Yes, Palin doesn't really know her stuff about MCain's policy. BUT, please don't forget the dog-eat-dog nature of the media. Most people have awkward moments in their interviews, but I think Gov. Palin was denied the luxury of the fancy editing that most others get. Furthermore, the questions appeared to be tailored to show her in the worst light possible before she even began to answer the questions.
My rant has come to an end. =)

"Love ya, bitch!”

I know that got your attention. =) This is a phrase that I’ve heard on television and among my peers. So the million dollar question is: WHY?!? When did it become ok to call our “friends” by a derogatory word? The justification? **Imagine the most annoying teenybopper voice** “We use bitch as a funny term of endearment.”
Well, I just find that extremely hard to believe. Let’s refresh on the definitions of the words “friend” and “bitch.”

Friend:
noun
a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically exclusive of sexual or family relations.

Bitch:
noun
1 a female dog, wolf, fox, or otter.2 informal derogatory a woman whom one dislikes or considers to be malicious or unpleasant.

I notice that among young women, many of us have an inclination to be spiteful and divisive towards one another. We make enemies with people we know little about and then forget why we don’t like each other in the first place. What happened to the “Girl Power” that the Spice Girls talked about? (throwback, I know.) Today, I revisited a website especially made for teen girls. On the message board, there is post that encourages users to write a candid letter to a friend without mentioning his/ her name. Basically, write everything that you are too afraid to actually say to your friend. With over 60 letters, the post has had an overwhelming response. Many girls express their feelings of jealousy, dislike, and even hatred for people with whom they claim to be friends. It’s evident that many girls don’t really like each other after all.
**In her presence** “Love ya, bitch!”
**Behind her back** An anonymous letter to your “friend” on a website.
I do see how this exercise can help people release emotions that they’ve been harboring for awhile. However, I do not understand the amount of resentment we have towards people that we claim to care about and enjoy being around. Why are we being so mean to each other? Here’s some advice: If you do not like someone, do not hang out with that individual! It’s only going to make you dislike her even more. Duh! Do not pretend that everything is fine when your friend puts the moves on that guy you have a crush on! Stop pushing the label “best friend” on people and then getting upset when she/ he disappoints you! Give each other S-P-A-C-E! It’s not always that simple, but it’s a start.
**Sigh** Maybe it’s The Hills that got me going, but I just felt that I needed to address this air of hostility among girls and young women. So the next time you call your friend “bitch,” evaluate your relationship with this person. Do you really enjoy, trust and respect her? Does she deserve to be called a female dog? I mean, of all the words in the dictionary and the street, can you not think of anything more expressive of the way you feel about your friend?

                ^Real friends^

Let's Hug + Why is The Hills popular? = MY 1st BLOG!

Hello, hey, what's up, hi! "ShanaSpeaks--> what's she saying now?!" has officially begun. I'm excited! It's fun to pretend like you have a serious following that reads every word you "publish."

This will be a short post because 1- I'm supposed to be packing; 2- I'm sleepy; 3- I don't want to talk you to death (yet).

Today was a good day. After my dentist finished digging for gold in my teeth, I went dress shopping with my sister. (I love the 7 train- image google it)

Speaking of a good day, here's a tip that I found in the August 08 Glamour magazine (of all magazines, right?) that can help you have a good day too. Hugging people can actually help improve your health. This action can cause the release of a hormone that reduces stress and improves cardio & immune system health. I always did like hugging (loved ones, not strangers). So stop acting like you hate your mom (or mother figure/dad/whoever) and give her a hug today!

1 more thing...

I am searching for reasons why I watch The Hills. It's basically 20 minutes of mumbling about so-called drama & I'm not sure why it's so popular. I think one explanation is because there's nothing else on TV these days. =/ Will further investigate...

That's all for now. Come back for more stuff about important and not-so-important events, etc.

bye.
