Confession of a Neglectful College Student =/

Evidently, I stopped blabbing once school started to approaching. My apologies, but no promises. I'd just like to reflect VERY briefly on this past semester (& what an appropriate day to be thankful). I just finished my first semester as a college junior and it has been TOUGH, for real, for real. Sometimes, I honestly felt like a slave to my academics, but once again, it all paid off! I'd like to thank God for his grace even when I'm less than graceful =). And I also thank all family and friends who have supported me through it, I couldn't have done it without them. Sooooo, what are you grateful for (this sounds like a Thanksgiving thing, doesn't it?)? What good has come to your life in the 2009? Just some food for though on this Christmas Day, as we approach a new decade. Happy New Year everyone!

Americans Can't Bear to Look at Michelle Obama's Legs? Give Me a Break.

Our First Lady, Michelle Obama, recently visited the Grand Canyon in a casual outfit, which included a pair of shorts. Personally, I don't believe the hype about the alleged "outrage" over Mrs. Obama's clothing. Who exactly, in this day and age, actually has the mindset or time to be "outraged" about other people's clothes anyway?

But just to put some things in perspective here, let's briefly review what's currently acceptable to the American public. I mean, maybe I'm crazy here.
So, let me get this straight. We accept and/ or like....

But some people are upset about Michelle Obama wearing shorts in the summer desert?

I just don't get it.

Despite Incessant Radio Mediocrity, 5 Songs Make it to My "In Heavy Rotation" List

I could post a rant about the rather pathetic state of music right now, but I've decided to share what's currently in heavy rotation on my iPod. Of course, I listen to much more than 5 songs, but these are at the top right now. Below is my Imeem playlist.

1. "Get Fresh" Another single from Chicago MC, Kid Sister (still patiently awaiting her official album; i don't do mixtapes). It's mean base line and electro sounds are--simply put--FRESH, hence the title. If I could, I'd totally break dance to this.

2. "Liberian Girl" Don't know about you, but I grew up on Michael Jackson. One of MJ's lesser-known singles off of 88's Bad album, "Liberian Girl" is authentically romantic, and not even the funniest Michael joke can take away from that.

3. "Ready for the Floor" I picked this one up from my sister, therefore, it's different. Between that contagious 80's dance sound and random cell phone/pager noises, I can't help put tap into my inner dork dance moves. And of course, the band's name is Hot Chip.

4. "So Beautiful" Musiq Soulchild has made yet another R&B song that is capable of converting even this hip hop head. Take note, young men. I promise you; when it comes to us ladies, Musiq is your friend, not Lil' Wayne.

5. "Butterfly" So the band name Crazy Town, may be leaning towards the lame side, but this old throwback is not. Nearly 10 years later, "Butterfly" is still that cool/chill/swagged-out song. Well, to me, at least.

Enjoy!

Why Are the "Real Housewives of Atlanta" So Dag on Phony?!

I’ve been avoiding talking about the Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA) for the longest, but I can’t hold it in any longer! It only took one preview of the first season for me to determine that a) I wasn’t interested and b) that I disliked the show. So, therefore, I kept my mouth shut about it. But the buzz about the second season made watching it irresistible, even to me.

So today at work, I was minding my own business when I got the news that Lisa Hartwell and her husband have "downsized" to a more affordable home, after their attempt to restructure their loan on their $2.9 million mansion “didn’t work out.” Ok, so this is the THIRD [not first or second] time a cast member has had difficulty [to say the least] with her home ownership due to threats of foreclosure or just plain old falling behind on the rent. All this has left me wondering, “Why are the Real Housewives of Atlanta so dag on phony???” I don’t care to bad mouth other women, especially the sistas, but the RHOA have left me no choice. If these women were humble and allowed their wealth and success to speak for themselves, maybe I wouldn’t be posting this. But, when you say things like, “In Atlanta, image is everything,” I’m going to expect you to put your money where your mouth is! Apparently, that’s all these women are—all mouth and no money [or not nearly as much as they pretend]. They’re so busy fighting with each other in order to be famous, that they [and their husbands] aren’t even paying attention to their finances. Get it together, ladies!

Economists Predict Recession Ending by 3rd Quarter, but What Does That Have to Do With You?

As economists happily reassure us that the recession will start ending by the third quarter of this year, I would like to remind everyone--especially people of color-- that economists aren't necessarily talking about you. They are referring to numbers and their textbook logic, not necessarily real people with real problems that have lasting effects [No disrespect to economists, but I have point here]. So while the unemployment rates are slowing, be aware that it is still expected to peak (at 10%) in the first half of 2010 and that these rates are higher for 1/3 of the population, better known as "minorities" (I don't care for the term). Not to mention the thousands of newly unemployed Americans--regardless of color--who lack the standard degrees and computer skills (Baby Boomer generation), who still have to actually seek jobs in a totally different work force than back in the 70's and 80's.

This is not a pity party, but just a reminder that mediocrity just won't cut it, especially for us.
